Simon Fjell

Simon Fjell is a sustainability pioneer, educator, designer, economic botanist, sustainable orchardist, serial ecosocial entrepreneur, professional speaker, writer, carbon developer CFI & REDD+

He is Co-founder director of the Permaculture Institute International (1976) which develops sustainable designs based on an approach to human settlements and agricultural systems modeled on the relationships found in nature. It is now a global sustainable design organization with many thousands of projects in over one hundred countries with over 150,000 graduates from its training programs.

He was a pioneer of the exotic tropical fruit and flower industries in North Queensland made possible by plant collecting expeditions to tropical regions throughout the world including the Amazon, the Congo and the Mekong. Following this he lived and worked in Latin America resulting in the establishment of a network of training centres and numerous projects including those in early land based carbon abatement.

Simon has now turned his attention to gaining in-depth insight into land based carbon such as Australia's Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI), including projects such as the Savannah burning of Northern Australian stretching from Cape York via the Gulf and Arnhem Land to the Kimberely. He is also an expert in Reduced Emissions Degradation and Deforestation (REDD+) projects globally.

The Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) is an Australian Government scheme to help farmers, forest growers and landholders earn income from reducing or offsetting emissions like nitrous oxide and methane through changes to agricultural and land management practices. Other opportunities in CFI carbon come from projects such as biofuels and reforestation.

The government, Indigenous groups and the CSIRO have developed the method for savannah burning, allowing Indigenous land managers to earn carbon credits by improving fire management in remote areas. This is an opportunity for “jobs on land” to help maintain culture while providing a valuable environmental service. Biochar is a soil amendment that is produced by the burning of organic matter such as wood or crop waste in a low oxygen environment. Biochar has the potential to mitigate Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions while benefiting agricultural production. A 4% increase in soil carbon could offset Australia’s entire emissions and increase agricultural yields.

Corporate offsetting with CFI carbon can give liable entities partnership beyond carbon opportunities that add value to Corporate Social Responsibility reporting and branding. Simon will discuss bridging these aspects and is expert in the CFI projects themselves.
